American Hero Quilts, which has provided more than 14,000 quilts to wounded service men and women for a decasde, will host a fundraiser next week.
The fundraiser will be a formal tea, said Sue Nebeker, who runs the quilt project. Quilts and letters of appreciation will be on display, and trays of savories and sweets made by volunteers will be served.
Nebeker, who is still very busy with the project, sends boxes of quilts regularly to the Warrior Transition Battalion at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, which houses 500 service men and women in need of care. She also sends more than 100 quilts each month to Bagram Airfield in Aghanistan, where the quilts cover wounded service personnel who are flown out for medical care.
Each quilt costs about $300 to make, Nebeker said, and she hopes this fundraiser will help raise about $4,000.
Two main donors have become war weary, she added, and the cost of some of her supplies has also gone up.
While many think of the war as winding down, Nebeker said she is not thinking of quitting now.
“I am in it until the end,” she said.
The tea will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at the former VFW Hall. Tickets, $25, are available at the Vashon Bookshop, Island Quilter and at the door.
