Get your Oktoberfest on
Vashon Brewing’s second annual Oktoberfest Celebration is slated for 12 to 10 p.m. Sat, Sept 21, at the brewery’s Community Pub. The festivities will include games for the whole family, music, German-style craft beers and food trucks. JD Hobson will play music at 1 p.m., followed at 3:30 p.m. by Danny Newcomb & The Sugarmakers and Billy Joe & the Dusty 45s at 6:30 p.m. The event will also include a keg rolling contest, kids’ activities, raffles and more. Admission is free to those younger than 21, and $10, which includes a free beer mug while they last, for ages 21 and older.
Series showcases LGBTQ films
A film series, held in conjunction with a Vashon Heritage Museum’s current exhibition on LGBTQ history on Vashon, will start with a potluck and screening of the film “Radical Harmonies” at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Vashon Senior Center. The documentary chronicles the Women’s Music Cultural Movement and its evolution from a “girl with a guitar” to a revolution in the roles of women in music and culture. The next film in the series, “Torch Song Trilogy,” will screen Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Vashon Theatre. The series is co-sponsored by the Heritage Museum, Vashon Theatre, Voice of Vashon, Island Greentech, Vashon Senior Center and 4Culture. For more information, visit vashonheritagemuseum.org.
The Cyclone Line returns
Island singer-songwriter Kat Eggleston’s play with music, “The Cyclone Line,” will be performed in a return engagement set for 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at Vashon Center for the Arts. The play had its world premiere performances at VCA in 2016. Set in Oklahoma in the 1930s, and inspired by the dust bowl memories of Eggelston’s father, the play tells a story of quiet, courageous lives upended by tornadoes and devastating dust storms. The new production, marking the release of a CD of songs from the play, is directed by Charlotte Tiencken and will star Eggleston as herself, Seattle actor Brian Guntar as Al, and Vashon’s John Browne in the musician’s role. Mystery writer gives talk
Island author Charlotte L. Stuart will present a short talk, “Getting Serious About Humor: Murder Mysteries that Bump Your Funny Bone,” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Vashon Bookshop. Stuart’s talk will include discussion about the types of humor found in mysteries and a humor continuum for categorizing mystery writers. She’ll also read from her new mystery, “Survival Can Be Deadly.” The book tells the story of a discount private investigator who sets out to find runaway girl, with the trail leading to a survivalist camp in the San Juan Islands. Mac Logan, the author of the Angels’ Share thrillers, has called the book “a diverting, humorous and human tale well told.”
Open house for new teen center
Attend an open house for OSpace4Teens, from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Open Space for Arts & Community. The event will include food, a DJ, photo booth and activities for teens. The new, almost 1,500 square-foot teen center includes a recreation area with ping pong and foosball, a pool table, piano, an open art studio and a lounge. Activities this fall and in 2020 will include dance parties, opportunities for advocacy and fundraisers for school clubs and teen causes.
