“The Horse Boy,” a documentary about one family’s experiences in Mongolia after their son’s autism diagnosis, will be screened by Vashon Film Society at 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, May 5 and 6, at Vashon Theatre. $7.
Samuel Green will appear at Vashon Library at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 6. Green has written poetry and taught in Northwest schools and colleges for three decades. In December 2007, he was named by Gov. Chris Gregoire to a two-year term as the first Poet Laureate for Washington state.
Café Luna’s monthly open mike will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 6, hosted by the event’s regular emcee and performer, Islander David Ray. Perform or listen to music, poetry, stories and monologues.
The Riptide Ramblers, a local Cajun band, will perform during the gallery cruise from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 7, at Sound Food. Vashon Winery’s Ron Irvine will also offer a wine tasting.
Rose Marie Everding, a New Mexico-based author who grew up on Vashon, will read from her novels, “Don’t Tell, Baby,” and “Before the Music,” at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 8, at Books by the Way.
Lyman Louis, a Portland-based singer and songwriter, will perform a free show at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at Café Luna. Louis’ influences range from Jim Croce to Fred Eaglesmith to Steve Seskin.
Karen Cushman, Newbery Medal-winning children’s book author, will do a reading and book signing for “Alchemy and Meggy Swan” at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 15, at Books by the Way. The event will also include snacks and activities.
