Spirit Award plays the Snap
Spirit Award, a popular Seattle psych-rock band, will play a free, all-ages show at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 21, at Snapdragon. The show is presented by islander Debra Heesch.
A trip to Paris with Kathryn Gustafson
Acclaimed landscape architect Kathryn Gustafson will detail her plans to transform the grounds surrounding the Eiffel Tower during a talk at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 21, at Vashon Center for the Arts. Gustafson and her firm, Gustafson, Porter + Bowman, have been selected by the city of Paris to revitalize the 135 heavily trafficked acres in the heart of Paris. The first phase of the project is to be completed prior to the Paris 2024 summer Olympics. Gustafson is known for award-winning contemporary designs such as Valencia’s Parque Central in Spain, Westergasfabriek Culture Park in Amsterdam and the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain in London. Musical theater kids do ‘Frozen’
Elsa, Anna and the land of Arendelle will come to life in “Frozen, Jr.,” a production by Vashon Center for the Arts’ musical theater education program for youth, at 7 p.m. Friday, July 26. The show features memorable songs from the animated film, plus new songs written for the Broadway production. Tickets for the family-friendly show are $5.
Acapella group performs medieval music
The acapella vocal ensemble Les Chanterelles, directed by Emi Ostrom, will perform its 10th and final performance at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 25, at Burton Community Church. Les Chanterelles, founded on Vashon in 2017, has performed at churches, festivals and classrooms throughout the Puget Sound region. This family-friendly program will include a mix of medieval chants, dances, madrigals and motets. It’s the last chance to see the group — its founder and director, Emi Ostrom, will begin a master’s program for baroque oboe performance at The Julliard School in the fall. Other members of the group have included Holly Boaz, Linda Strandberg, Anne Lyman and Marjorie Bunday. Tickets, $20 general, $18 seniors and free to those ages 18 and younger, are on sale at Vashon Bookshop. A portion of all proceeds will be donated to The Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services to support families seeking asylum in the United States.
Island songstress takes the stage
Island singer and songwriter Sarah Christine will launch her newest album, “Time to Shine,” at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 27, at Snapdragon’s Black Cat Cabaret. The album features 11 original compositions with Christine performing lead vocals, stacked harmonies, acoustic guitar, piano and synthesizer. It also features an all-star cast of 13 local area musicians and was engineered, produced, mixed and mastered by Martin Feveyear at his studio on Vashon Island.
