I write in support of Prop 1. Our park board has a responsibility for keeping the playing fields mowed, our ancient swimming pool in operation and for doing many activities that are not glamorous but require doing regularly. I believe last week’s op-ed by Scott Harvey is a belligerent tirade including willful misstatements (Too much, too soon — vote ‘no’ on Prop. 1.)

Readers will recall that Scott was elected to be a commissioner to the Vashon Park Board. Lamentably, he is unable or unwilling to collaborate, and, failing to get his way, abruptly resigned in the middle of a meeting, leaving the board without a quorum. Scott Harvey resigned rather than work toward solutions. Our serving park board cannot write the needed rebuttal. Regulations prevent that. Please disregard the rant of a bitter fella. Scott would have you reject Prop 1 as a continuation of his personal vendetta.

The list of park properties needing deferred maintenance is a long one. To name just a few, the Ober Park playground equipment is nearly 20 years old (wood structures, for instance, are rotting). The potholes at Agren, Point Robinson and Lisabeula present risks of damaging vehicles. The repairs needed for the pool were identified in a 2016 Engineering Analysis Report by a reputable engineering firm. Moreover, our playing fields depend upon maintenance.

Having parks is part of why living on Vashon can be pleasant. Please do not be distracted by Scott Harvey’s unproductive anger that he personally harbors for the park board. We need deferred maintenance and current maintenance.

Vote ‘yes’ on Prop. 1.
