Dine, learn with seniors
Sunday, May 18, is potluck Sunday at the Senior Center on Bank Road from 2 to 4 p.m. Bring your friends and family to enjoy good food and companionship with us.
Seniors also have the opportunity to participate in several upcoming classes:
Robotics
Are you as smart as a fifth grader? Design and build robots with them at Chautauqua Elementary School from 1:15 to 3 p.m. Fridays, May 23, 30 and June 6, as part of a free Senior Center workshop.
Using Lego Mindstorms kits, you can build and program robots that use sensors to respond to their environment — to follow a black line or turn around when they bump into things. No experience is necessary; bring your curiousity, and prepare to have fun. Transportation from the senior center on Bank Road will be provided. Call 463-5173 to sign up.
Wines of the World
Owner and winemaker of Vashon Winery Ron Irvine leads a tasting tour of six wines he likes from Australia, South America, Europe and North America from 6 to 8 p.m. May 21, at the senior center on Bank Road. He promises some surprises and a great learning experience; the fee is $8, and the class is open to everyone. Call the senior center at 463-5173 to sign up.
Earth Elder Revolution
The role of elders as Earth keepers will be examined by Jan James, activities coordinator at the Vashon Community Care Center, 15333 Vashon Hwy S.W., in a series of free lectures at the Vashon Community Care Center at 2 p.m. open to all members and ages of the community. Topics are:
May 21 – “Elders Today: Obstacles and Opportunities”
June 18 – ‘Finding Our Place in the Universe Story”
July 16 – “The Great Work”
Aug. 20 – “Elder Initiatives”
Sept. 17 – “Legacy: Taking Action Now”
The series includes discussions about redefining the meaning of late life.

It happened once before: loads of fun, great food and good coffee. It could become a tradition.
It’s a brunch, so bring a dish to share. We’ll provide liquids.
Tell other Vashon Maury Island Susans, Susies and Sues. Maybe Suzannes, too (we’re open-minded).
Be sure to RSVP to Susie Hedrick at 567-4546, rainshine@centurytel.net or Susie Kalhorn at 463-4006, burnhorn@earthlink.net.

Food costs are topic for Dems
Why is my food costing so much? This month the Vashon Democratic Club will discuss the rising cost of our food as well as the quality and source of food. We are proud to present a panel of local food and agriculture experts: Mark Musick, a resource conservation consultant and former farmer who will talk about the flow of food in our community and the food cycle; Karen Kinney, an agriculture marketing specialist for the King County Agriculture Program; Joe Yarkin, Vashon Island Growers Association board member and local farmer; Yvonne Pitrof, executive director of the Vashon Maury Community Food Bank and Tim Marsh, personnel manager for Vashon Thriftway.
After a short presentation by each member, there will be ample opportunity for the audience to ask questions about how we as individuals and as a community can begin to resolve our food cost, quality and sourcing issues. Come join us. All are welcome.
For more information about this program, see the commentary on page A4.
If you or your group would like to make a presentation at one of our meetings, or for general information, please contact Roger Fulton at 669-9459.
Our meeting is this Saturday, May 17, in the Land Trust Building: potluck social at 6 p.m., meeting from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Please help us accomplish our goal of a no-trash potluck by bringing your own, non-disposable dinnerware.

Hicks speaks to Unitarians
’Tis the silly season of political polarization and social stigmata. When does extremism itself become the vice, no matter the agenda it promotes? Can the strait and narrow way squeeze between radical opposites without becoming the coward’s way? To be or not to be … is that really the question?
Ken Hicks is a fellowship member who will present this service, called “Clowns to the Left of Me, Jokers to the Right,” at the Vashon Island Unitarian Fellowship on Sunday, May 18.
For more information, call Wendy Wharton at 799-9433.
Vashon Island Unitarians meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Burton Community Church, 23905 Vashon Hwy.
Religious Exploration is offered for children 3 and up.
