Islander Jonathan A. Timmen was charged in King County Superior Court Feb. 8 with assault in the second degree and unlawful possession of a firearm in the first degree.

Timmen, 45, was arrested following an episode of domestic violence earlier in the week. His bail has been set at $300,000.

Ryan Abbott, the spokesman for the King County Sheriff’s Office, said deputies were called to the 17300 block of 97th Place SW about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, after a 911 caller reported that his daughter had been shot at by her estranged boyfriend.

Charging papers state that when one of the deputies was leaving the substation on Bank Road to respond to the call, the victim flagged him down in the building’s parking lot. Inside, the deputy called Vashon Island Fire & Rescue personnel, who treated her and her year-old son for minor injuries.

The island’s other deputy responded to the call and requested additional resources from off-island.

According to Abbott and the charging papers, the altercation began when the victim dropped her child off at Timmen’s home; he is the boy’s father. Concerned that it was taking her a long time to return, the victim’s parents went to the suspect’s house, where one of Timmen’s family members let them in. Inside, the victim’s father heard a loud verbal altercation and a gunshot from the bedroom and forced his way into the room. He tackled Timmen to get the gun away from him; his daughter and young child were able to leave, and Timmen fled. Investigators later found a bullet hole in the ceiling of that room.

One of KCSO’s K-9 units came to the island to track Timmen, initially believing he was on foot. Law enforcement also alerted Washington State Ferries and provided descriptions of the suspect and of a vehicle he might be driving. A ferry crew on the southend’s Chetzemoka reported to the sheriff’s department that they believed Timmen was on board a sailing from Vashon not long afterward. Abbott said the Tacoma police met the ferry and arrested the man, turning him over to the King County Sheriff’s Office. Timmen was booked into jail at approximately 10:30 p.m. on the investigation of felony domestic violence assault and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Charging papers indicate Timmen’s record includes prior domestic violence offenses in 1994 and 2016. It also includes several DUIs and convictions on Robbery 1 and Burglary 1 armed with a deadly weapon. On those charges, he was sentenced to 41 months confinement in 1993. As a convicted felon, he was not supposed to own a firearm or have one in his possession.

Timmen is scheduled to be arraigned on Feb. 19.
