A young member of the Rock Riders, Vashon’s 4-H equestrian club, is already racking up the ribbons.

Roehre Cunningham, 12, earned high blue ribbons, considered the highest ribbons, in four of the five events he competed in with his horse Honey Rose at the King County Fair earlier this month. Competing in a field of about two dozen equestrians in his age group, Roehre also placed seventh in Showmanship, fourth in Hunt Seat, second in Bareback and was grand champion in the Stock Seat event, earning a large trophy.

His awards made him the number-two rider for his age in King County and earned him a spot at the state fair in September.

Roehre is not a Vashon resident, but he’s a longtime member of the Rock Riders. The grandson of Joe Cunningham, owner of Bay Breeze Farm, Roehre learned to ride on Vashon and still comes to the Island regularly to ride and compete with the Rock Riders.

Cunningham said Roehre, who comes from a family of avid equestrians, has always had a knack for riding. He has caught the attention of judges since he was very young, Cunningham said, and he won his first show at age 5.

“He’s very talented. I’m not just saying that because he’s my grandson,” he said.

Roehre’s father, Roehbe Cun-ningham, agreed, and said Roehre has a strong work ethic for his age. Roehre is also a competitive bull rider and regularly wins awards at rodeos.

“He tries so hard at everything he does,” Roehbe said.
