Please note: The event has been changed to Friday, Sept. 8.
Islander Peter Serko has a habit of pursuing — and successfully achieving — creative endeavors without any previous experience. Three years ago, he wrote and performed the one-person show, “My Brother Kissed Mark Zuckerberg,” about his brother, David, who died of AIDS. He wanted to honor his brother and raise awareness about the disease that has killed so many. That he had no previous theatrical or creative writing experience didn’t play a role in Serko’s thinking. Last year, he taught himself how to make a film and recently completed the documentary “Footnote,” which tells the backstory of his solo performance.
Wanting to show his film on Vashon and highlight the importance of taking action on others’ behalf, Serko organized “Making a Difference: An Evening of Music, Film and Inspiration,” slated for 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Vashon High School theater.
The evening is a fundraiser for Journeymen, an island nonprofit that seeks to encourage positive change in society by mentoring young men. Two former graduates of Vashon High School, Alex Craighead and Nicky Wilks, founded the organization to help young men and boys discover meaning in their lives and connect with their communities.
Along with the screening of “Footnote,” island musician Jacob Bain, who mentors young musicians in Africa, will appear in a rare acoustic performance with Caleb Cunningham.
“The whole concept for the evening is about making a difference,” Serko said. “Everyone, even the people in the film, saw some need and took some action. You never know the outcome, but it is important to act.”
Tickets are $10 and sold at journeymen.us and at the door.
