It’s been a wild, though admittedly wonderful, ride for indie pop/rock singer-songwriter Cami Lundeen, who left the island three years ago to promote her then new album, “Run Free.” She and her family toured the country in a tiny pop-up camper, eventually settling in Florida. In the years since she left, Lundeen has written, recorded and compiled a series of songs into her latest album, “Wild Ride.” Lundeen will return to Vashon to perform a free show of the soon-to-be-released songs at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Red Bike.
“My upcoming album, ‘Wild Ride,’ captures all the twists and turns in my life since the release of ‘Run Free’ in 2013,” Lundeen said. “These songs are based on my life, my journey. Similar to ‘Run Free,’ it’s a continuation of my story, a story and message in which anyone and everyone can relate to and find hope and inspiration.”
Lundeen’s story began in 2010, when she received a life-changing diagnosis just before her 30th birthday. A mother of four small children, Lundeen learned she had a rare, incurable and progressive liver disease. Grappling with the devastating news, Lundeen turned to music, finding much- needed solace in writing songs and singing.
“The name ‘Wild Ride’ has definitely come from my own life experiences. This life has been a wild ride, but I wouldn’t trade it. Not that there aren’t situations that we would much rather do without, but what we go through, the hardships and the joys, makes us who we are. They shape and mold us. The most beautiful things can come from the most broken situations. I try to look at life in such a way as to not regret, but to learn and grow and help others in whatever they may face along their journey,” Lundeen said.
The singer, who plays guitar and when singing solo also kicks the bass drum, will be joined by her band, including Wesley Peterson on drums and Jason Everett on bass.
Her sultry voice has been described as “beautifully haunting,” while her creative and heartfelt lyrics are often quite moving. In a recent press release, her style was likened to the “bluesy-soul sound of Adele with an alternative rock flare reminiscent of The Cranberries, the edginess of Pink and the rock rasp of Janis Joplin.”
A fundraising campaign for the recording and distribution of “Wild Ride” is currently being held during her summer tour throughout the Seattle, Anchorage and Washington D.C. areas. She will close out the campaign and tour with her show on Vashon.
“I am so excited to be returning to what I still consider my hometown to share my music once again,” Lundeen said. “Four years ago, to my extreme awe and immense gratitude, you all made ‘Run Free’ possible, and now I am humbly before you again asking that you help make ‘Wild Ride’ possible.”
The show will be open to all ages until 11 p.m., then ages 21 and older only.
