In a world that is requiring people to spend more time at the office, some islanders, especially those who commute or work long hours, are finding it difficult to get home with time to make dinner. Noticing this trend, takeout businesses offering prepared dinners ready to eat are springing up.

Now, Burien-based Maven Mercantile is joining the convenience business and hoping to open a store that will serve as a takeout dinner hub at the south end of Vashon town this summer.

Heidi Pomeroy, Maven Mercantile chef, owner and founder, moved to the island from Burien one year ago. She opened her first Maven Mercantile on the mainland four years ago and has since been serving “super tasty, nutritious” meals via her app.

“We do prepared meals, kind of hearty salads, fast lunch and dinner,” she said. “The Vashon shop will be to-go only. We have an app so people can be on the ferry, order, pay, grab dinner and go.”

She said the menu changes daily and she offers gluten free, vegetarian and meat options.

“Something for everyone,” she said.

But the business is also a store and will sell local food from Seattle, Portland and possibly island producers, as well as house-made spice mixes, cookies and granola.

She said the idea for a Vashon location came from a need she and her husband experienced. They both work off-island and get home late — after 7 p.m. She said she wanted a way to get food without having to go to a restaurant.

“We wanted to swing by and grab it on our way home,” she explained. “We’ve been meeting people on the island throughout the year and they ask what we do, and the first question when they find out is always, ‘When are you going to open on-island?’”

She said she was waiting for a good location to come up and saw the chance when the former medical marijuana dispensary south of town closed. She has signed a lease for the building and construction has begun. She hopes to be open by Strawberry Festival.

“We’re doing a lot of work,” she said. “We’re really hoping to be open mid-July, and it’s seeming realistic so far.”

While Maven Mercantile has its own food delivery service, Maven Meals, Pomeroy said it will not be available on the island. However, she said she is considering partnering with Vashon Eats to deliver food.
