Jim Page plays the Bike
Jim Page, a well-seasoned Seattle singer and songwriter known for his soulful playing and fearless take on social issues, will play a free, all-ages show at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Red Bicycle Bistro. Page’s songs, some of them inspired by seminal events including the 1999 WTO protests and 9/11, are available on three CDs.
There’s lots to do at Luna
James Coates, a Sumner native who performs folk and pop music, will play a free show at 7 p.m. Friday at Café Luna. For more information about the singer, visit www.coatesmusic.net.
Island talent will take Luna’s stage the next night, Saturday, at an open mic hosted by Richard Waits, Joe Allison and David Ray from 7 to 9 p.m. Musicians, singers, poets and other performing artists are all welcome. This ongoing open mic will take place on the last Saturday of every month.
A concert series revives
Leslie Kernochan, a Boulder, Colo.-based singer and songwriter, will perform a house concert at 7 p.m. Sunday at Hanna Barn Studios.
The singer is coming to Vashon as part of a revived house concert series presented by Mik Kuhlman and Martha Huber. The series, dubbed “Small Hand Open Fist,” brought many performers to Vashon in the 1990s. After a 10-year hiatus, Kuhlman and Huber have decided to start presenting concerts again. Kuhlman said she is particularly excited to begin the series anew with a show by Kernochan — one of her favorite singers.
Kernochan, who has a range of influences, from folk pop to jazzy bluegrass, has released two solo albums and traveled internationally with several bands. Tickets to the show are $15/$10 and are on sale at Books by the Way, Vashon Bookshop and Minglement.
Time for a new ‘New Works’
Veteran Island movement artist/choreographer Karen Nelson and friends will launch the VAA New Works Series with a show called “Pause/Scrub/Play,” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Blue Heron. Nelson will be joined by dancer/choreographers Kris Wheeler and Lila Hurwitz, visual installation artist Susan Gladstone, percussionist John Dancey and other guest performers. For the love of wine and myth
Vashon author Terry Hershey will host “A Night with Bacchus,” a fundraiser for Vashon Poetry Fest, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at Vashon Winery. The evening will be a celebration of wine and the rich cultural vein of myth, folklore and poetry that surrounds it. Masks will be available, and Martin Koenig will teach attendees a few Greek folk dances. Tickets, $20, should be purchased in advance at Vashon Bookshop and Books by the Way.
