VHS wrestlers power ahead, earn accolades

Vashon wrestlers continue to grapple their way through the season, and Coach Anders Blomgren kept The Beachcomber updated from the road as the team traveled between meets last week.

Coming off the previous week’s meets with Bellevue Christian — where the Pirates dominated 42-24 — and the Everett Classic, where two varsity and four junior varsity wrestlers were crowned champions, the team met Klahowya on Friday, Jan. 13. The day lived up to its unlucky reputation, however, as the green-and-gold suffered a 48-18 loss, despite pins from Cory Williams, Adrian St. Germain and Luke Larson.

The next day, the team made its way to Rainier High School for the Sgt. Justin Norton Memorial Tournament, and saw competition with 20 other high schools from around the state. The Pirates came home from what Blomgren referred to as a “tough” meet with a silver medal from St. Germain, a bronze from Larson and three fifth-place finishes from Jake Carman, Moses Kilpatrick and Julian Fifield.

Rounding out the wrestling news, two VHS wrestlers were recently named Washington Intercollegiate Athletic Association athletes of the week: For week 17 of the academic year, Larson was chosen for winning the 14-team Rock Tournament with zero points scored against him, and going 5-0 in the finals. And for week 18, St. Germain was honored for his (to that point) undefeated season, and pinning all but one of his opponents en route to winning his weight class at the Everett Classic.
