On Saturday, April 10, Vashon Island Rowing Club traveled to Lake Stevens to participate in the Northwest Sculling Regatta. This event is unique because in sculling, each rower uses two oars, as opposed to the single sweep oar used in most regattas. With 18 American and Canadian clubs competing at the event, more than 400 rowers spent the day racing on Lake Stevens on 1,000 to 1,500 meter courses.
For this regatta, Vashon’s junior rowers were in 20 events and on the medals podium for 14 of those events.
Vashon Island Junior Crew is a cooperative program between Vashon Park District and Vashon Island Rowing Club.
The team extended thanks to Mary Nerini and Leslie Farriell for providing a hearty breakfast and lunch, to Joanne and Steve Kicinski for the use of their truck, and to Dennis Williams for driving the boat trailer.
The rowing club’s next race will be on Friday, April 23, in Canada at the Brentwood Regatta. There will be more than 1,500 athletes and teams from all over the western United States and Canada.
