Lt. Col. Norman C. Stanley, USAF Retired, passed away on February 28, 2010, at home with his family in Florida. He was 76 years of age.
Norm was born on Vashon Island, February 24, 1934, to Bert H. Stanley and Marjorie C. Stanley.
He was a 1952 graduate of Vashon High School. In the Fall of 1953 he interrupted his studies at the University of Washington to begin a career in the United States
Air Force. On August 3, 1957, he married Nancy Knowles of Samson, Alabama
and shortly thereafter was assigned to special military missions in Germany. His military assignments included Electronics and Navigation instructor, flying reconnaissance missions during the Vietnam War, and training aircrews on the RF-4C.
He concluded his distinctive military career at Eglin AFB, Florida, where he was
Deputy Chief of Staff for Test and Evaluation for the USAF Tactical Air Warfare
Center, during which time he participated in test programs, including evaluation of the Condor Missile. He retired after 20 years of outstanding service. His many awards included the Distinguished Flying Cross. Following his retirement Norm enjoyed boating, deep-sea fishing, golf tournaments and support of his wife’s passion for baseball. He attended several NASCAR Driving Schools.
He is survived by Nancy, his beloved wife of 52 years; daughters Lenora Stanley and Norma Stanley (Bill Healy); brother Roger Stanley; sister Roberta Diesner(Dick); nephew Paul Diesner (Sumirah) and nieces Liz Diesner (Jackie) and Martha Diesner. Final interment with Military Honors was held at the Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Florida.
