Hobson/Person will perform from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Sound Food. The duo will play every Wednesday night at the eatery through Nov. 18.

Captain Smartypants and Sensible Shoes: Two choral groups will perform pop, jazz and comedy at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at Open Space for Arts & Community. Captain Smartypants has performed all over the Pacific Northwest and beyond, sharing stages with the likes of Nell Carter and Rosemary Clooney. Sensible Shoes is an ensemble of Seattle Women’s Chorus. Tickets, $20 in advance or $25 at the door, are available at Books by the Way, Vashon Bookshop and www.brownpapertickets.com. The show is for ages 21 and older. Identification will be checked at the door.
Daryl Redeker, Tori Sparks and Turner Down will play music, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi. Redeker, a well-known Island player, has had a long career teaching and performing music. Tori Sparks calls Nashville home, but spends most of her time on the road in the U.S. and Europe. Turner Down is made up of local Island musicians who have been playing together since 2003. The show is free and is an all-ages event until 11 p.m., after which time it is for ages 21 and older only.
Russell Clepper will perform original music at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at Café Luna. Clepper is a Texas-born singer/songwriter who now lives on Whidbey Island. A few of his songs can be heard at www.myspace.com/russellclepper.
The Dudley Taft Blues Overkill will take the stage at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi. The band, which is a fixture on the Seattle music scene, plays Texas style blues. The show, which has a cover charge of $5, is for ages 21 and older.
Vashon-Maury Chamber Orchestra Children’s Concert will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Methodist Church. The orchestra will perform with guest student soloists, and feature guided listening from Swingset Music leaders Kim Thal and Gabrielle Burgess. Admission is “pay what you can.”
Laura Cerven and Kirk Spurlock will perform a night of Fleetwood Mac songs from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi. Spurlock and Cerven have performed rock and contemporary Christian music at various venues on the Island. They will be joined by bass player Matt Eggleston. This is a free show for all ages.
Vashon-Maury Chamber Orchestra will perform a full-length concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at the Methodist Church. Featured performers are Karin Choo and Danielle McCutcheon, who will perform solos in works by J.S. Bach and American composer Steve Reich. Tickets, $10 general admission and $7 for children and seniors, will be sold at the door.
UMO performs “El Dorado” next week: UMO Ensemble, Vashon Island’s resident physical theater company, will mark its anniversary of 20 years on Vashon with two performances of its internationally acclaimed production, “El Dorado.” The troupe will present the show two nights only, at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, November 13 and 14, at Open Space for Arts and Community. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door, and are available at Books by the Way, Vashon Bookshop and online at www.brownpapertickets.com. “El Dorado,” created in the style of buffon theatre, focuses on the Spanish conquistadors’ quest for the legendary “Kingdom of Gold” in the Americas.
