Leroy “Roy” M. Shanaman died July 18, 2005, on Vashon Island with his family by his side. He was 97 years old.
Mr. Shanaman was born March 28, 1908, in Coatesville, Penn. He was the second to the youngest of five children born to George and Lillian Shanaman.
He came West in 1926 and worked as a timber surveyor for Weyerhaeuser, then went on to attend the University of Oregon where he received his degree in business. He played catcher for the Oregon Ducks.
During World War II he served as a captain in the Navy in the South Pacific.
While home on leave, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Grace Whitaker in Palo Alto, Calif.
After the war, the two moved to the Northwest to begin their family. He started his career with Penn Walt, and they made Tacoma their lifelong home. He continued his love of the outdoors through hunting, fishing and boating.
In 1965, along with his friend Norm Iverson, he caught a prize 76-pound King salmon in Rivers Inlet, British Columbia.
Survivors include Marilyn Andrews, his sister Kathryn Robinson of Westchester, Pa., his sons Michael and wife Donna of Potlach, Idaho, Stephen and partner Terry of Vashon Island, and grandchildren Kate Bender, Michael Reed Shanaman, James, Brian and Rory Shanaman, three great grandchildren and his nieces and nephews.
