Daniel Richardson Beggs III of Vashon,
Washington, died Tuesday, September 23.
Dan was born to Opal Mutch and Daniel R.
Beggs Jr of Winchester, Massachusetts, attended Hebron Academy Prep school and served in the
US Airforce for 4 years after highschool. He married Grace Eberhardt and relocated to Wilmington, Delaware where he spent most of his adult life. Dan was a regular at the Wilmington Skating Rink where he both played and coached ice hockey for decades, leaving a legacy of ice hockey players including his sons Dan Beggs IV, Jeff Beggs and grandson Dan Beggs V.
Dan moved to Vashon to be closer to his daughter and VCC in the event he would need care there. Indeed he did live at VCC but not before he became a beloved member of Vashon Presbyterian Church and several on-island organizations dedicated to healing and transformation. Dan was most often seen in the community with his dog “Angus”, and later “Sandy”. These trusted companions were truly his heart’s riches. At the age of 77, Dan began a new life on Vashon and created a life replete with rewarding relationships, proving to himself that even “an old dog like me can learn new tricks.”
“Dapper Dan” felt honored to be able to live at Vashon Community Care with his dog “Sandy” and to enjoy the fellowship of so many who loved him, and whom he in turn, loved. He dressed in a suit and tie every Sunday to attend the church services in the dining room and to honor God and the people around him.
Dan is survived by 3 children: Judith Beggs-Ruegamer of Vashon, Washington; Dan Beggs IV of Wilmington, Delaware; Jeff Beggs of Egg Harbor Township,
New Jersey, and 5 grandchildren: Dan, Jeff, Brittany, Peyton and Gracie.
Dan’s life will be honored at a memorial service on Saturday, October 4th , 1- 3 pm at Vashon Presbyterian Church.
