Harvey Ward Smith

Harvey Ward Smith, a former islander, died June 28, 2003, at his son’s home in Port Townsend, Wash., of heart failure. He was 92 years old.

Mr. Smith was born Oct. 21, 1910, in Tacoma, Wash., to Peter and Helen (Stafford) Smith. He grew up in Tacoma and had to drop out of school in ninth grade to help support the family because of his father’s poor health. His primary professions were upholstery and ice cream making.

On June 6, 1944, he married Mabel Hayes in Tacoma, Wash., and moved to Vashon the same year. He lived on Vashon until 1991. Mabel died in 1971.

Mr. Smith later married Phanoy Crisler Engles, who died in 1992.

Mr. Smith did not serve in the military because of a 62-foot fall from a building in 1937. He coined the phrase, “Old upholsterers never die. They just keep recovering.”

He enjoyed painting with water colors and drawing with charcoal.

His brother Robert, sister Mary Helen and his two wives died earlier.

Survivors include his sons Bruce Smith of Port Townsend and Harvey Norman Smith of Anchorage, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A private burial was on Vashon.
