Longtime Vashon Island resident Richard Harmeling died Jan. 22, 2005. He was 87 years old.

Mr. Harmeling was born May 4, 1917, on Vashon. His parents were pioneers.

He was known for being a hard worker. He was self employed as a masonry contractor. He was active hunting and fishing. He was a life member of the Vashon Island Sportsmens’ Club.

He and his wife Wini enjoyed playing golf at the Vashon Island Golf & Country Club. His beautiful yard kept him busy while enjoying the flowers, vegetable garden, and fruit trees. His home gave him much joy. He also was an avid bird watcher and an expert at identifying mushrooms.

He leaves a legacy of beautiful fireplaces in many Island homes and commercial masonry work such as at McMurray Middle School.

Survivors include his wife Wini, son Jay, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and others.

Services are not planned at this time. Remembrances may be made to the Vashon Maury Island Heritage Association.
