Skate board enthusiasts celebrated the beginning of construction of a skate bowl at the Burton Adventure Recreation Center (BARC) on Monday.

Representatives from Grindline Skateparks, a respected West Seattle company, were at the park on Monday, marking the bowl’s location and getting the heavy machinery in place to break ground on Tuesday.

The project should take just six to eight weeks to complete, according to Vashon Park District Executive Director Elaine Ott. The short construction time is a sharp contrast to the planning of the project, which was first conceived about a decade ago, and has been beset with delays since then.

After Monday’s party, which featured pizza, cupcakes and attempts at breaking the hard ground with a shovel, BARC Stewardship Council board member Jenni Wilke noted the skaters’ enthusiasm.

“Everybody is excited, and everybody kept saying, ‘It’s really happening! It’s really happening!’” she said.
