Annual Kutscher Silverwood show
The Sept. 4 gallery opening at Silverwood Gallery will feature Ted Kutscher in his 10th annual exhibit there. The Burton gallery will be open for First Friday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Kutscher is an Island artist who paints things that move him, said gallery co-owner Margaret Heffelfinger. He’s also an attorney in Seattle.
“He delights in the little bits of life — chickens in the yard, a woman picking flowers, a dress shop,” Heffelfinger said. “He sees irony and humor that others might miss, and captures it for all of us. The dress shop might have a Harley parked in front.”
With Kutscher will be the copper repoussé sculpture of Ivonne Escobar de Kommer, and the work of Curt Minier will be introducted. The show opens at noon Sept. 4.
Every September, Kutscher’s work is shown at Silverwood, Heffelfinger said. Silverwood is the only gallery that shows Kutscher’s work.
Kutscher “doesn’t scrimp on the paint,” she said. “It is as lush as the scenes he captures with it.”
Two Wall features Farmers Market
Two Wall Gallery will be the scene of a cornucopia of art and food that puts the spotlight on Vashon Farmers Market this month.
The gallery is hosting a collection of artwork from several Island artists who have chosen works that capture the vitality and spirit of Vashon Farmers Market. Some of the pieces were entries in the 2009 Vashon Farmers Market poster contest. Whether it is food, flowers, wine or local handicrafts and art, the market showcases the Island’s talents and its bounty. So too will the pieces in the Two Wall show this month.
The flavors of the Farmers Market will also be featured, as food from local farms is offered up during First Friday. The exhibition opening will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4.
The artists in the show include Allison Trundle, Ralph Moore, Barbara Wells, Brian Fisher and Irene Otis.
‘Felt’ and ‘Sketched’ at VALISE
During September, VALISE Gallery presents an interactive sound installation, “Felt,” by Gust Burns and Melanie Noel, and “Sketched,” a group of new paintings by VALISE Gallery member Brian Van Buren. The shows begin Sept. 4, with an opening from 6 to 9 p.m.
“Felt” explores the processes of disintegration and accumulation: how matter, form and surface hold, reveal and alter what they contain.
Four footlong dubplate records on four separate turntables, each with its own sound system, may be played by visitors to the gallery — one at a time, all at once or in any combination. Two are piano recordings by improviser Burns and two are poems by Noel.
The records will disintegrate slowly over the course of the installation. As the surface material breaks down, so does the sonic material, altering what is heard, when what is heard is already uncertain depending on which records are played in what combinations.
“Sketched” features interpretive portraits in oil, resulting in sketches reflecting quick moments of interaction. It explores the facial expressions, gestures and postures we use to communicate.
Noel is a poet and lives in Seattle. Burns is a pianist, improviser and composer based in Seattle. Van Buren paints portraits and other interesting subjects in oil in a variety of styles.
