Works by Mozart, Handel and Puccini will be played by the Vashon Maury Chamber Orchestra on Saturday in two concerts that will include a solo by guest pianist Lisa Lewis.

Lewis, who performs as a soloist on harpsichord and piano with many different orchestras and choirs in the region, will tackle Mozart’s “Piano Concerto No. 9,” a work that was described by the famous pianist Alfred Brendel as “one of the wonders of the world.”

The orchestra’s musical director, Karin Choo, is exited for Islanders to hear Lewis play the piece.

“She is a great interpreter of Mozart, and is absolutely brilliant,” Choo said.

Mozart wrote 27 piano concertos in his short life, and Choo said that No. 9 is considered by many to be the first real masterpiece among them.

“It’s a huge work,” Choo said.

The concerts will also include Handel’s “Concerto Gross Op. 6” — a piece that will spotlight Island violinists Choo, Annie Roberts and Sarah Perlman.

And if all that isn’t enough, there will also be a set of three minuets by Puccini.

“You don’t usually hear instrumental works by Puccini,” said Choo. “These are three springy minuets.”

The chamber orchestra has 14 core members, but in the upcoming concerts, they will be joined by six more players who are members of Vashon Youth Symphony, a program for middle-schoolers run by Islander Gaye Detzer.

As always, the concerts aren’t only for adults.

The first concert of the day, at 11 a.m., is aimed specifically at children and will be hosted by Swingset Music’s Gabrielle Burgess and Kim Thal.

The children’s program will also include a dance by Madeleine Morser, a recent graduate of Blue Heron Dance. Morser performed several principal roles for the dance company.

Vashon Maury Chamber Orchestra will present its spring concerts at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at the Methodist Church. The morning concert is for children and admission is by donation. Tickets for the evening concert, $10 general and $7 for students and seniors, will be sold at the door.
