The latest installment in Vashon Island’s monthly variety show, “The Church of Great Rain,” will take place at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28 at Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi.

The show, organized by Islanders Greg Parrott and Frank Hein, is modeled on “A Prairie Home Companion.”

This month’s line-up of guests will include The Vashon Folk Choir, a homegrown troupe of singers under the direction of Shane Jewell. The group, which is currently looking for new members, will sing a mix of world music and gospel tunes.

Jewell brings to the choir more than 17 years of experience performing, arranging and teaching classical, folk and a cappella music. Trained at the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio, he has performed with traditional musicians throughout the United States, Ireland, India, the Philippines, Canada, England and Mexico.

The evening will also feature a return visit from Seattle singer Lisa Marshall. Marshall is a rhythm and blues singer who says she is influenced by such soul divas as Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight and Mavis Staples.

A review in the Monterey Herald newspaper recently said Marshall “belts ‘em out like Janis Joplin and can gyrate like master contortionist Joe Cocker.”

She has released her first solo CD called “Simple,” available for sale at www.lisamarshallmusic.com.

Another musical act, The Greedy Boys, will also appear on stage, with instrumentation including viola, guitar and mandolin. The Greedy Boys are Noah Dolan, Shane Jewell and André Sapp.

Back, by special request, is Great Rain’s resident parson, the Reverend Hunter Davis. Organizers said Davis knows how to deliver “one wicked sermon.”

Susan McCabe will host the show, and the Great Rain house band will add music.

There is no cover and “The Church of Great Rain” is an all-ages show.
