Vashon Opera’s sixth season kicks off in September with Mozart’s “Don Giovanni.” Tickets for the 2014-2015 season are on sale now, with individual tickets for “Don Giovanni” going on sale in August.
“Don Giovanni” is considered one of the greatest operas. Part comedy, part tragedy, the opera is based on the fictional legends of Spanish libertine Don Juan. Critically acclaimed baritone Anton Belov will make his Vashon debut as Don Giovanni. The New York Times describes Belov as “a baritone with a rich, mellifluous voice.” The rest of the cast includes Janeanne Houston as Donna Anna, Eric Neuville as Don Ottavio, Megan Chenovick as Zerlina and Konstantin Kvach as the Commendatore.
In February Vashon Opera will offer “The Music Shop” as a free performance for island children. The opera tells the story of a mild-mannered man who goes to a music store to buy a song, but he can’t remember the title or tune, which creates many amusing capers.
The season concludes in May with British composer Benjamin Britten’s “Albert Herring,” a comic opera written in 1947. Witty, poignant and multi-layered, the opera highlights the misadventures of a lonely shop-boy in an English village full of colorful characters.
