Blue Heron Dance Company’s annual production of “The Nutcracker” will have a few new twists and turns this year.

Dance company director Christine Juarez has added new choreography, and new set pieces designed by Tony Furr will also debut in this year’s production.

According to Juarez, Furr’s designs were inspired by the gothic sensibilities of Tim Burton, a filmmaker known for his eye-popping films including “Alice in Wonderland” and “Edward Scissorhands.”

“We’re very excited,” Juarez said.

Clara, the young girl who dreams the holiday fairy tale, will be danced by Ally Clevenger. Clara’s brother Fritz is played by John Misel. The Nutcracker Prince will be performed by Quinn McTighe.

Camille Kappelman will dance the part of Sugar Plum Fairy, and Haley Mosteller will dance the Snow Queen. The Arabian dance will be lead by Mara Drape and Kappelman.

“The Nutcracker” will be performed at Vashon High School at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 3 and 4, and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 4 and 5. Tickets, $10 and $13, are on sale at Thriftway, Island book stores, Blue Heron, Heron’s Nest and www.brownpapertickets.com. There will also be a special $5 performance for pre-schoolers at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3.
