Dr. Sputnik lands at Luna

Phil Royal and friends will present “well-worn tunes” in a musical night entitled “Dr. Sputnik — No Cure For Time” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at Café Luna. There is no cover charge.

Big prize for fiber artist

Vashon fiber artist Nancy Sipple’s wall hanging “A Japanese Sampler — Family Style” won third place in a prestigious contest sponsored by Hoffman California-International Fabrics.

The renowned fabric company designs and produces screen-printed, hand-painted and dyed cottons and blends.

Every year, Hoffman selects one of its prints to be the featured fabric in the “Hoffman Challenge,” a contest that challenges entrants to incorporate the chosen fabric into an original creation.

This year’s contest attracted almost 600 entries in four categories (quilts, dolls, garments and accessories).

Sipple’s work — which won in the quilt category — will be included in an exhibit that will travel throughout the United States and Canada.

Sipple described her wall hanging as “more an embroidery than a quilt,” and said that she used Japanese family crest designs as inspiration. The piece took more than six months to complete.

Painter added to roster

Vashon painter Joanne Hammer has been added to the Washington State Arts Commission’s Public Artist Roster.

The Public Artist Roster is a listing of professional artists eligible for public art projects administered by the Washington State Arts Commission’s Art in Public Places Program.

Every two years, the commission holds an open competition to select artists for inclusion in the roster.

A professional jury culled through more than 330 artist’s applications. Hammer was one of 68 artists in the final selection.

Wortis has big Seattle show

Vashon artist Joan Wortis will have a major exhibition of her work Sept. 4 through Oct. 31 in Seattle at ArtXchange Gallery, located at 512 First Ave. S.

Islanders familiar with Wortis’ work will recall that she was a commissioned artist for Vashon Allied Arts’ 2004 Art Auction.

The Seattle exhibition, “Points of Departure,” will feature 28 new works in print and collage. For more information, visit www.artxchange.org.
