Last year when the temperatures reached dangerous levels for animals, we got help from an Islander freezing small water bottles to be put in socks and placed in the cages of our shelter ferrets. It made a huge difference. (Thank you, Bridgett Shore.)

The ferrets draped themselves across them or laid near them during the hot part of the day. It may have saved their lives. This year we can freeze our own.

Big bottles would be best for large animals, but the smaller ones work fine for small cats and dogs. Just place them in the area they rest in. We always have a bunch frozen and rotate them in and out as needed.

Occasional cold water dips may also be necessary. Watch your pet carefully for signs of dehydration.
