“Catching the Moon,” a touring production of Seattle’s Book-It Repertory Theatre, will come to Vashon this weekend as the latest offering in Vashon Allied Arts’ new family series.

The play, adapted from a book by Crystal Hubbard, tells the true story of Toni Stone, an African-American girl who grew up in the 1930s.

An avid baseball player, she chased down fly balls, stole bases and dreamed of becoming a professional ball player.

One day her spirit and talent caught the eye of a baseball summer camp coach, and through perseverance, pluck and luck, Stone overcame unbeatable odds to become the first woman to play for an all-male baseball team.

“‘Catching the Moon’ is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and belief in oneself,” said Janice Randall, who is Vashon Allied Arts’ director of communications and performing arts.

Book-It Repertory’s mission is to inspire people of all ages to read and make literature accessible, fun and educational. The company tours a diverse range of productions based on books throughout the Pacific Northwest, conducts residencies in schools and presents student matinées of its main stage shows.

“Catching the Moon” will be presented at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 28, at the Blue Heron. The show, written to appeal to all ages, is most ideal for ages 4 to 13.
