Folk and blues come to Luna
Café Luna will be the scene of a rousing folk and blues music performance by Anna Laube and Tom Rill at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, July 5. There is no cover charge.
Anna Laube’s pan-genre (folk/country/blues/Americana) pop crossover is, in the words of CDReviews.com, “acoustic, atmospheric, wide open, and western…dirt-covered highways and the setting sun.” The music is simple and relaxed, derived as much from the American folk-troubadour tradition as it is from newcomers like Ani Difranco and Cat Power.
Town Rill is the musical alias of songwriter Birger Olsen. Birger has been writing and performing his singular brand of blues for many years, melding upbeat finger-style guitar grooves with a rough baritone voice, lending a timelessness to even the most contemporary of his songs.
Slammin’ poetry

VAA looks for new works
Island performing artists are invited to apply for Vashon Allied Arts’ New Works Series 2009. The New Works Series provides the Blue Heron venue for Island artists to premiere new work and/or new collaborations between January and November 2009. Artists from many disciplines — music, dance, literary and theater — are encouraged to apply.
An interdisciplinary panel of Island performing artists will meet in October to review and select recipients. Application forms are available now at Blue Heron Art Center or online at www.vashonalliedarts.org. The deadline is Saturday, Sept. 27.
VAA New Works Series was established nearly 20 years ago for Island resident artists to present new work to the community. Past New Works Series performances have spawned memorable performances by Daryl Redeker, Maggie Laird, Arlette Moody and others.
