School bond debate

A public debate with pro and con presentations and time for questions and answers will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Feb. 11, at Courthouse Square.

The public, particularly those who are undecided about which way to vote, are encouraged to attend.

FRIDAY 13

School bond talk

Terry Lindquist, Vashon Island School District superintendent, will discuss the proposed capital facilities bond and answer questions at the Vashon Senior Center at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13. All are welcome, especially those who are undecided.

SATURDAY 14

Adopt-a-cat day

Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) hosts an Adopt-A-Cat Day every Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at its adoption center at 12200 S.W. 243rd St.

Catholic rock

The Catholic rock band, The Thirsting, will appear in concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. The event is free, and all students in grades six through 12 are invited to attend. Check out the band at www.myspace.com/wearethethirsting

Library Late Night

Late Night @ the Library will meet at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, for students in grades six through 12.

Teens can limber up with Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero open play, participate in the Vashon Library Cyber Café, surf the Web or play a game.

SUNDAY 15

Presidential voting

The Vashon unit of the League of Women Voters of King County South will meet at the Vashon Library from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15.

The topic for discussion is the “National Popular Vote Compact,” a method that, in essence, works around the Electoral College to assure election of the president by popular vote, but without having to amend the U.S. Constitution.

Dance for peace

Winter Feast for the Soul will present the Dances of Universal Peace at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, at the Land Trust Building.

The dances will be led by Zubin Goldman, certified dance leader of Peaceworks.

‘Frog Prince’ puppetry

“The Frog Prince” will be performed at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17.

A traditional fairy tale comes alive in this hilarious puppet show. Princess Ella must marry to become queen, but a witch has turned her suitor into a frog. Can this slimy, ugly frog convince her to kiss him before it’s too late?

WIC program here

The Women, Infants and Children program (WIC) provides free vouchers for nutritious foods as well as nutrition education for qualifying low-income pregnant and breastfeeding women and their infants and children up to age 5.

The clinic is held the third Wednesday of every month from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2:30 p.m. This month the date is Feb. 18.

A registered dietician, social worker and public health nurse are available through this program. The clinic is located at the Vashon Methodist Church, 17928 Vashon Hwy. S.W.

Food film

The Vashon Island Growers Association (VIGA) will host a showing of a documentary called “Good Food,” which premiered at the 2008 Seattle International Film Festival to enthusiastic audiences in sold-out theaters.

The showing on Vashon will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Vashon Theatre. Filmmakers Mark Dworkin and Melissa Young will attend, along with Vashon farmers and food activists and musicians who appear in the film.

A $5 donation is suggested; children are free. Following the screening at the theater, people are invited to gather at Café Luna for more discussion of local food with the filmmakers.
