More than two months after it was announced the Vashon Tea Shop would be put up for sale, the owners of Vashon’s Anu Rana’s Healthy Kitchen have moved in and started work on the building.
Birbal Rana, co-owner of the family business, said this week that he has been working on the building’s interior since the beginning of the month, but is waiting on permits from King County and doesn’t know when the shop will open.
“We don’t have any definite plans,” Rana said. “We’re just going to take it day-by-day. That’s what we have done so far.”
The business specializes in grain, dairy and gluten-free baked goods. Rana’s wife, Anu, bakes her treats out of the Back Bay Inn kitchen in Burton and began selling them at the farmers market in 2012.
“We didn’t know if people would like (what we were selling), but they did, and it grew,” Birbal Rana said. “We don’t make a plan, necessarily, we just take it as we go.”
The business started when Anu and Birbal’s daughter began playing sports and would take granola bars to snack on. Anu had trouble finding healthy bars and decided to make her own. Soon, everyone loved them, Birbal and Anu’s daughter, Avi said.
“She just wants people to be healthy,” Avi said of her mother.
The family has been wanting to open a “restaurant-type space for awhile,” Birbal said, but it has always been out of reach. He and Avi will run the store and sell Anu’s pre-packaged treats along with some Nepalese cuisine, coffee, tea, sandwiches and salads. Anu will continue to bake out of the Burton kitchen.
“It was a tea shop, so I think it’s important to keep that part of the former business going,” Birbal said. “We’re going to have to learn how to make all the different coffee drinks and figure out what people want from this space.”
He said the direction of the store will be largely based on what the public wants and what customers respond to. He said he wants to have the store open early — around 6 a.m. — so commuters can get coffee and breakfast before the early ferries.
Few Vashon coffee businesses are open before 7 a.m. on weekdays: AJ’s Espresso opens at 5 a.m., Café Luna, the Roasterie and Subway open at 7 a.m. and Thriftway opens at 8 a.m.
Anu Rana’s bought the former Vashon Tea Shop earlier this year after Elizabeth “Boo” Dinan-Slack announced in March that she was selling it.
The shop has been a staple in Vashon town since the early-2000s and changed hands three times before Dinan-Slack sold it.
