The Vashon High School girls’ softball team had two successful wins in its recent outings.
On Monday, April 4, Vashon traveled to Washington High School in Tacoma, where freshman Chloe Kuyper pitched the game and managed four strikeouts on the day. The team played good defense and battled through seven innings to bring home a win for Vashon, 15-10. The big bat for the day went to freshman Olivia Larson, who hit a triple, double and single in all.
Over spring break last week, the Pirates traveled to Klahowya on Monday, April 11, to take on the Olympic League rival. Klahowya has a tough reputation, and Vashon came with only nine players to compete. Vashon began the first inning, scoring Larson by way of a walk and sneaking her around by stealing. Klahowya answered back by scoring two in the first inning. The Pirates brought all bats blazing in the second inning, scoring seven runs thanks in part to a triple from junior Makenna McVey.
Vashon then dug in its heels and played spot-on defense while Klahowya tried to trickle in a few more runs. Kuyper pitched the entire game and delivered two strikeouts, while junior catcher Hannah McArthur scored all four times she went to bat. The final score was Vashon, 12, to Klahowya, 9. The game was a big win for Vashon and a confidence boost for the team of nine that was in sync.
The Pirates took on Eatonville at home on Monday after press time and will play Seattle Christian in Seattle today, Wednesday. The team will wrap up the week with a 4 p.m. home game against Seattle Christian on Thursday and a 1 p.m. home game against Port Townsend on Saturday.
