New play, partnership coming up
Open Space for Arts & Community and Drama Dock will partner in presenting the play “Becky’s New Car,” by Steven Dietz, for two weekends beginning Friday, April 22, at Open Space.
The acclaimed contemporary play has a special Vashon connection. It was commissioned in 2008, as a birthday present from former islander Charles Staadecker to his wife, Benita. Written by Steven Dietz and premiered at ACT Theatre, “Becky’s New Car” has been produced worldwide multiple times.
According to Variety Magazine, “Becky’s New Car takes the audience on a smart, comic cruise through the perils of middle-aged longing and regret.”
The Spokesman Review said, “Steven Dietz’s ‘Becky’s New Car’ begins as an occasionally hilarious screwball comedy and gives way to a disarmingly thoughtful drama about the nature of love, fidelity and second chances. Based on the play’s first act, which is snappy and broad and breathlessly paced, you wouldn’t imagine that it could transition so seamlessly into its touching closing scenes.”
The coproduction between Open Space and Drama Dock is a first as is the staging, which will be in the round.
Michael Barker will direct the local cast of thespians — Elise Morrill, Marshall Murray, Ryan Alumbaugh, Harris Levinson, Lisa Breen and Michael Shook.
Performances will be April 22, 23, 29 and 30 at 8 p.m., and April 24 and May 1 at 7:30 p.m., in the Grand Hall at Open Space.
Tickets are available at Vashon Bookshop, brownpapertickets.com and at the door.
