The King County Medical Examiner’s Office on Thursday identified the 59-year-old Vashon man pulled from the water off Luana Beach last Wednesday morning, April 6, and ruled his death a suicide.

Jonathan King died from asphyxia due to saltwater drowning, the medical examiner’s office reported. King County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Cindi West said he was found in the water near the 23000 block of 60th Place around 11 a.m., roughly three hours after U.S. Coast Guard officials in the area discovered a small aluminum boat adrift with a life vest and cell phone inside.

After the discovery of the boat, Vashon Island Fire & Rescue (VIFR) responded around 8:20 a.m. with King County Sheriff’s officials. A Coast Guard unit and the Des Moines Fire Department were already on their way, VIFR Chief Hank Lipe said.

The Coast Guard removed King’s body from the water. Multiple Seattle-area news helicopters arrived in the area after the recovery effort.

A press release from West indicated that a member of the Coast Guard called a contact on the cell phone that was in the boat and learned it belonged to King, who lived on Vashon. When sheriff’s deputies responded to King’s residence, no one was home.

The medical examiner’s office did not release any further details about the circumstances surrounding the death or the reasoning behind the ruling of suicide.
