Last Friday and Saturday, the scent of flowers wafted through the Vashon Library, as the Vashon-Maury Island Garden Club took over the library’s meeting room and filled it with more than 200 plants for the club’s 59th annual flower fair.

“I’m surprised there are this many, with the weather we’ve been having,” said club president J.R. Crawford.

She did note, however, that vegetable entries were down this year due to the difficult growing season. 

Crawford estimated that around 300 people visited the show. About 160 of them cast ballots for their favorite flowers and plants in each category. “Its was very successful,” she said.

Kay White, who is an avid gardener as well as a significant donor to Vashon Allied Arts’ new arts center and was grand marshal of the Strawberry Festival parade, entered a number of plants and took home the most awards from the event. 

Her plants won first, second or third place in annuals, bulbs, roses, grasses, shrubs and trees.

The garden club has seen constant growth in recent years, Crawford said, and now has over 100 members.
