Vashon author and illustrator Jane Valencia will perform tales from her children’s fantasy and Vashon-inspired book, “Because of the Red Fox,” at 2 p.m. Sunday at Vashon Bookshop. The event is free and open to all ages.
Valencia is a well-known Celtic harpist and has been a bardic storyteller for the last 20 years. In her upcoming performance, she will incorporate storytelling, harp, song and folklore as well as a reading from her book. In a recent email, Valencia explained the role of a bard.
“A bard serves as a voice for the community, the land and for whatever one holds dear, using story, poetry, music and more.”
For Valencia, nature’s magic and a child’s lively nature were what she held dear, what she found that inspired her to create the book and what will fuel her performance.
“I want my readers and audience to experience the fun and magic that’s always around us,” Valencia wrote. “This performance is particularly special to me because the characters’ home, Yonder Island, is pretty much Vashon viewed through the lens of enchantment. I’m eager to hear from the audience about island magic they have experienced.”
