The Beachcomber’s recent editorial on homophobia had a fun line containing four negatives: “In some circles, as this incident sadly (1) points out, it is not (2) unspeakable (3) to be anti-gay (4).” Positively, this could be reduced to, “We should speak for gays.” Or negatively, it could be reduced to, “It should be unspeakable to speak against gays.”
This reminds me of the first Vashon community council meeting I went to about 18 years ago. Someone proposed a motion, and it actually passed, which could be summed up as, “Vashon Islanders will not tolerate intolerance.” Our “weird” Island is even more interesting when a sane person, such as Louise Rice, sheds light on it. Louise, there are some residents here who support you.
